This PR is currently on pause given its many blockers like splitting the DocumentStore into two parts and investigating performance changes from changing our garbage collection strategy. We also want to add tests to our post-refactor DocumentStore. We've gotten a very basic version working but doing this correctly requires major overhauls to the codebase that we currently do not have time for.
